Review: I purchased a brand-new Nuvi 5000 GPS unit. However, there are some serious problems with it. Beginning one week ago (approximately 5 to seven days after receiving the package) this GPS started to freeze and locks up, while navigating. These electronic failures are very serious, because the unit stops working as you are navigating in traffic, and it is hard to tell that the unit has stopped working because the display is still on, but frozen. These events are now occurring approximately once every 3 hours of operation, rendering this unit as completely unreliable.
Every time that the unit freezes it is necessary to stop, pull off the road and plug the unit, and start all over again. While frozen the unit does not respond to any input, the touch-screen does not respond, and even the on and off the button doesn't work!
I have contacted technical support at Garmin two times, and they have made note of the problem. Unfortunately, as this is a new product, they don't have enough experience with this product to be able to resolve the problem.
Garmin does believe that I have a unit that is faulty (most likely due to faulty operating system, they said), and the only solution they offered is that I should wait for a software patch to be release in the near future...Some help for a near $800 Garmin product that does not work. Do not buy this product!
Pros: large screen
Cons: No A/C power cord included. No battery in unit.No protective case.
